Shedd Adventures 2014
Alaska (July 6 to 13)
Glaciers, Islands and Intriguing Inlets
Set sail for a week of scenic channels and secluded wilderness. In Southeast Alaska our luxury adventure boat, the Safari Endeavor, meanders through the waters surrounding the Tongass National Forest—the largest in the United States—home to grizzly and black bears, mountain goats, bald eagles and wolves. We’ll pass huge icebergs en route to view massive thundering glaciers in Glacier Bay National Park. Then we’ll enter some of the world’s deepest fjords to hike, kayak and explore the natural wonders of this stunning landscape. Afterward, we’ll set a course for the whale-rich waters of Icy Strait, Frederick Sound and Stephen’s Passage, while keeping watch for the telltale signs of humpbacks, orca, porpoise, sea otters and sea lions.

Sunday, July 6
You’ll be whisked from the Juneau airport to shipboard.
Monday and Tuesday, July 7 and 8
We’ll travel nearly 60 miles up the coast of Glacier Bay National Park in the company of a park ranger. This wilderness is home to puffins, sea lions, mountain goats, bears, moose and eagles. If conditions permit, we’ll lower the skiffs and weave among the icebergs that have fallen from the face of the glaciers. Don’t miss a serene early-morning kayak paddle.
Wednesday, July 9
Keep watch at the rail for the telltale blow of the humpback whales, along with porpoises, sea lions and other wildlife. In the afternoon, we’ll drop the skiffs and kayaks for closer inspection of the remote coastline and possible bear sightings. After a day of exploration, relax in the upper-deck hot tub.
Thursday, July 10
Today we’ll take a leisurely cruise along the waterfall coast of Chichagof Island and into the “not-in-the-guidebook” wild places known only to the locals. This evening, perhaps tucking away in a waterfall-laced fjord, there’ll be time for skiffing, beachcombing, treks ashore, or kayaking to look for sea otters before calling it a day.
Friday, July 11
We’ll spend the day exploring Frederick Sound and Stephen’s Passage, with excellent chances of seeing more humpback whales. Passing the Five Fingers Lighthouse, watch for sea lions at a populous haul out. Later, enjoy cruising picturesque bays where evergreen forests crowd the shores.
Saturday, July 12
With more designated wilderness areas than any state in the nation, Alaska’s finest include Endicott Arm and Ford’s Terror. You can explore these towering fjords by kayak or skiff. Cap your voyage with a festive farewell dinner and a slideshow of your trip.
Sunday, July 13
We gather for breakfast before returning to historic Juneau. From there, transfer to the airport or begin your Un-Cruise hotel stay or land tour.
Due to the nature of our explorations, itineraries are guidelines and will change in order to maximize wildlife and natural encounters. Variations in itinerary and the order of days may occur.
Meet Ken Ramirez, your Shedd Aquarium Guide
Ken Ramirez gets a chance to speak with whales, dolphins and other marine mammals every day as Shedd’s executive vice present of animal care and training. Ken is a biologist and animal behaviorist with more than 35 years of experience in zoological animal care. He came to Shedd in 1989 to manage the training and husbandry programs for the marine mammals and other animals that would live in the Abbott Oceanarium, which opened in 1991. Ken’s expertise extends to marine mammals in the wild, and he has taken part in dramatic wildlife rescues in the United States and Canada. On a more daily basis, he delights in showing aquarium guests how the same techniques used to train the marine mammals can be applied to improve a pet’s behavior—with locally rescued dogs to prove it during the aquatic shows.
